"This Da Capo Press paperback edition of One Thousand and One Night Stands is an unabridged republication of the first edition published by Doubleday & Company, Inc. in New York in 1960. The present edition contains a new introduction by Walter Terry and is reprinted by arrangement with the original publisher." -- t.p. verso
"Ted Shawn (1891-1972) was one of the great pioneers of American dance. A dancer, choreographer, and teacher, with his famous partner and wife Ruth St. Denis he formed Denishawn Company and School, whose illustrious pupils included Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. Probably the Denishawn's major accomplishments were the founding of schools throughout America that trained thousands of students in modern dance technique, and their almost single-handed creation of a large audience for this new art. After they separated in 1932, Ted Shawn began an all-male company whose virile and athletic style helped destroy existing prejudices against male dancers. In 'One Thousand and One Night Stands' Ted Shawn, aided by Gray Poole, tells the exciting story of his life and art, from his earliest pre-dancing days to the establishment of the dance center at Jacob's Pillow, taking us along the way to some fabulous places, and introducing us to many fascinating people - none of them more amazing than Ted Shawn himself." -- Book cover
