"Ted Shawn (1891-1972) was one of the great pioneers of American dance. A dancer, choreographer, and teacher, with his famous partner and wife Ruth St. Denis he formed Denishawn Company and School, whose illustrious pupils included Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weidman. Probably the Denishawn's major accomplishments were the founding of schools throughout America that trained thousands of students in modern dance technique, and their almost single-handed creation of a large audience for this new art. After they separated in 1932, Ted Shawn began an all-male company whose virile and athletic style helped destroy existing prejudices against male dancers.
