520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. |
Summary, etc. |
"This study is an intellectual history of the modern American theatrical dance in its first flowering. Its purpose is to demonstrate how dance managed to enter the mainstream American culture and achieve status as a respectable art form. The story has two parts: dance as it developed in theater, and dance as it was used for educational purposes. The main characters are those dance innovators who, with vision and perseverance, dared to question the established order and to investigate history, philosophy, the arts, and the potentialities of the human body in their search for a contemporary, viable expression through movement." -- Book jacket |
