Dancers to remember :
Anthony, Gordon 1902-1989
Dancers to remember : the photographic art of Gordon Anthony / foreword by Dame Margot Fonteyn. - New York : Rizzoli, ©1980. - 149 p. : chiefly ports. ; 28 cm.
Bibliography: p. 149.
"Dame Margot Fonteyn remarks in her foreward to this stunning collection: "Gordon Anthony is one of the great photographers whose work gains with the perspective of time. His pictures of dancers have a very personal stamp that is instantly recognisable - they are instructive, amusing, quaint, and very nostalgic. This is a record to be treasured."
Presented here are some 200 of Gordon Anthony's best pictures of dancers and choreographers, including Ashton, Fonteyn, Nijinska, Fokine, Massine, Dolin, Markova, Moira Shearer, Tudor and Toumanova. Gone are the rigid poses for solo ballerinas; in their place is life, movement and imagination. The male dancer is at last acknowledged as an important artist in his own right. The photographs are complemented by two appendices: one gives details of the ballet, year and place of performance and choreographer, and the other describes Gordon Anthony's methods and techniques.
Gord Anthony, brother of the founder of the Royal Ballet, Ninette de Valois, was one of the great ballet photographers of the era and author of fifteen books on the subject. Now retired, he lives in England." -- Book Jacket
